Meet Donald Lee

In spring 2022, Donald Lee was featured and interviewed in a documentary on the Black cowboy, produced by Al Roker, which aired on national TV. The Beaumont, Texas, native has been a cowboy all of his life. He was a member of the Fort Worth Herd for more than five years and enjoys riding and writing. He also has a horse-riding business and loves sharing his knowledge and expertise with children.

An alumnus of Grambling State University in Grambling, La., with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Donald also has nearly 30 years of professional journalism experience. He’s previously worked as a copy editor, reporter and columnist at such newspapers as The Kansas City Star in Missouri; The Advocate, in Baton Rouge; the Belo Corp.-owned Arlington Morning News; and the Dallas Weekly.

He also is co-author of the Christian-based book, “Married to Commitment,” which centers on the importance of commitment.

As a drover, a term used to describe cowboys who drove cattle in the 1800s, Donald worked with Texas Longhorns. He and other drovers, mounted on horses, drove the Longhorns up the street in the Fort Worth Stockyards as a tourist attraction. Donald also wrote a blog for Visit Fort Worth, which manages the Herd.

One of Donald’s favorite quotes is from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “An individual has not started living until he can rise above his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
